Software to support writing

ENDNOTE reference managing software

If you are a Hanyang Student, are you using endnote www.endnote.com reference managing software ? Check the site licensed software download section in your Hanyang EZHUB account. The university has a site license.

The software lets you manage your references and automatically formats them in the correct style once you have inputed the information. Many journal article sites allow you to download the references for an article into this software. It will save you hours and hours of time over the course of your research.

Cafe site has a discussion in Korean.

General Research Skills

Finding journal articles

Crossref allows you to search across journals from different publishing companies. It is good for the beginning stages of research on a new topic as you narrow down your search. It may produce results that are too wide but I find that university library searches across databases tend to be even wider while searching only a single publisher like sciencedirect.com may miss important articles. I also find the google format easier to read than most library homepage interfaces.

Dictionaries and reference materials

Importance of "Backtranslation" in bilingual dictionaries

When using a Korean to English dictionary, please remember to "back-translate" a word from Korean to English before making a choice. We can see from this link that there are many different Koreans for the English word "Besides," but many of them are not correct for academic writing and the first word of a sentence in English.

Other common translations errors from Korean to English include

"Besides, on the other hand, on the contrary, and especially."
